The door’s down and the customer wants it fixed today. The fastest fix starts with ordering the right part first time. Here’s how we suggest identifying automatic door replacement parts for common operators like GEZE, Dorma, Tormax and Record, so the part that turns up is the one you need.
Start with the Operator, Not the Part
Most ordering mistakes happen because the operator wasn’t identified properly.
Find the Model Label
Take the cover off and look for the manufacturer’s label on the operator or control unit. Note the full model name and any version or generation marking, not just the brand. Two operators from the same manufacturer can look alike and take different parts. On GEZE sliding operators, for example, the control unit version matters for some parts.
Photograph Everything
Before you strip anything down, take clear photos of:
- the model label
- the part you’re replacing, in place and removed
- any part numbers, markings or labels on the part itself
- connectors and how they’re wired
Photos are the quickest way for us to confirm a match.
Labels Missing? Don’t Guess
On older or modified installations, the label may be missing, painted over or unreadable. Note the door type (sliding, swing, folding), the operator’s rough size and layout, and anything printed on the circuit boards. Then send us the photos and we’ll help you work it out.
Battery Packs: Match More Than the Voltage
A battery that fits the bracket isn’t always the right battery. Check these before ordering a replacement battery pack:
- Voltage: printed on the old battery or pack. Some operators use a single pack, others build up the voltage from more than one battery.
- Quantity: some operators need two batteries. Several of our listings flag this, including the Dorma ES200, Record STA 18/20 and Tormax Windrive batteries.
- Chemistry: sealed lead-acid and nickel-cadmium (Ni-Cd) packs aren’t interchangeable. Match what was fitted.
- Capacity: the Ah or mAh rating is usually on the label.
- Connector and leads: check the terminal type, the plug and the lead length.
- Physical size: measure it if the space is tight.
The battery on the label isn’t always the original, because it may already have been replaced. Our GEZE Slimdrive DCU listing notes that replacement packs aren’t always supplied on the plate. If in doubt, check the operator model and call us.
Drive Belts: Measure, Count and Check the Profile
Many belts look alike. When you’re choosing a replacement drive belt:
- Read the back of the old belt. Many belts have a size or part code printed on them. It wears off, so look closely.
- Check the width and tooth pitch. Measure across the belt, and the distance between tooth centres over several teeth.
- Measure the length. Measure the old belt if it’s intact, or the run on the operator if it isn’t. A stretched or broken belt will give you a misleading figure.
- Note the tooth profile. Make sure it’s a toothed belt and the teeth match the pulley. Some operators use smooth belts.
We supply main drive belts for Besam, Dorma, GEZE, Tormax, Ditec and more, per metre or pre-cut. For more detail, read our guide to identifying the right drive belt for your door operator. Motor belts are listed separately.
Sensors: Match the Job the Sensor Does
With automatic door sensors, the brand matters less than matching the function and the installation.
What Does It Need to Do?
- Activation: opens the door when someone approaches.
- Safety: protects the closing or swing area.
- Combined: activation and safety in one unit.
If the door must meet EN16005, check that the replacement provides a monitored safety output where the operator needs one. Many of our sensor listings say whether they’re EN16005 compliant.
Check the Installation Details
- mounting position: header-mounted, ceiling-mounted or on-door
- mounting height, and whether the detection direction is uni- or bi-directional
- supply voltage, outputs and wiring to the operator
- on-door safety sensors: the width and number of modules
We stock Hotron and Optex sensors, along with BEA, plus sensor accessories.
Is It the Sensor at All?
Before you replace a sensor, rule out wiring, settings and alignment. Our photo-beam sensor faults diagnostic guide walks through the checks.
Carriage Wheels: Check More Than the Diameter
Carriage and load wheels wear over time and can cause noisy or jerky door operation. When ordering replacements, check the diameter, width, bearing type and bore size. For a full walkthrough, read our guide to carriage assembly wear and what to check.
When the Part’s Obsolete
When a manufacturer discontinues a part, the door doesn’t have to stay broken. We make parts in-house. Send us the old part or a drawing, and if it can be made, we’ll make it. For bespoke manufacturing, we’ll quote your lead time.
Not Sure? Ask Us Before You Order
Not sure which carriage wheel you need? Sensor compatibility got you scratching your head? Our team has 40+ years’ combined experience in the commercial door field, and our technical support is free. Pick up the phone and we’ll talk you through it, no charge.
